About these stories

These are fictional characters from the video game Don't Die a Betis. They are not real people, and their stories are not medical advice. For real experiences of type 1, see Finding your people.

Marty, in pixel art: brown hair, red jacket, jeans.

Marty

Type 1 for years. Lives in Inglewood, Calgary.

I could do my mornings in my sleep. Check, breakfast, insulin for breakfast, out the door. Then a diabetic asteroid flew past the Earth, and now my punches are powers.

Marty's day still starts the same way: the note on the fridge, the long-acting shot at 7:00, a finger check. What changed is everything outside the door. Most people without diabetes did not survive the asteroid, and everyone who already had it woke up super-human. His SPIN attack still costs blood sugar.

What helps: knowing where the next washroom is. In the game, every washroom is a save point.

Toonie, a dark grey dog in a working vest, in pixel art.

Toonie

Diabetic alert dog. Came through the asteroid untouched.

Woof.

Toonie declined to say more. Her trainer, who waits outside Marty's front door, says she now smells a low from across the street. She barks before Marty goes low, on the map and in fights, and she barks again ten minutes later if he is still heading down.

What helps: eating something when she barks.

Riley, in a green shirt, in pixel art.

Riley

Type 1 since age nine.

After the asteroid, every faction wanted me. I turned all of them down. I've been managing this since I was nine. I can manage without a famous leader telling me how.

Riley joins Marty at the hockey arena, once Johannes Wintergreen is beaten. In a fight, Riley is a steady brawler with quick combos, and shares juice once per fight when Marty is low.

What helps: a friend who carries juice.

Joy, in a yellow top, in pixel art.

Joy

Parent of a child with type 1. Carb counter.

I counted every carb my son Miguel ate, for years, to the gram. Then the asteroid made him super-human and he went off with a faction. I'm going to get him back. Until then, I'll count yours.

Since the asteroid, Joy has started to develop diabetes herself. She joins Marty at the airport and flies with him. In fights she keeps her distance and throws lunch kits, and at meals she counts the plate for him.

What helps: reading the label. Every time.

Mr. Dhillon, grey-haired, in a white pharmacist coat, in pixel art.

Mr. Dhillon

Pharmacist, Inglewood.

Somebody had to keep the pharmacy open. People still need test strips. And the Special Authorization still has the pump supplies locked in my back room.

Mr. Dhillon has started to develop diabetes himself since the asteroid. He joins Marty once the Special Authorization in his back room is beaten. In a fight he is slow, with a hit that sends enemies flying, and he hands over a spare test strip each fight.

What helps: a pharmacist who knows your name.

The Special Authorization, an angry stack of forms holding a rubber stamp, in pixel art.

The Special Authorization

Coverage form. Granted for a year at a time.

Thank you for your interest in sharing your story. Your submission has been received and is under review. Please allow 6 to 8 weeks, and resubmit with eight months of claims history.

The Special Authorization guards the pump supplies in the back room of the Inglewood pharmacy. It fires rejection letters with the reason written on, and its health comes back whenever you stop hitting it. The fight is optional. For the real form, see Getting it covered.
