About this site

diabetis.ca is the website of Don't Die a Betis, a video game about type 1 diabetes, made in Calgary. It is also a plain, checked guide to living with type 1.

What this site is

Don't Die a Betis is a beat 'em up about surviving type 1 diabetes in Calgary. We wanted its website to be useful to the people the game is about, so most of it is a guide to type 1: what it is, the first weeks, everyday life, technology and living well.

The game comes up a lot. It is our featured partner, on every page.

How the articles are written

  • Every medical statement is checked against primary sources: Diabetes Canada's Clinical Practice Guidelines and patient pages, Breakthrough T1D Canada, and government pages for rules such as driving, travel and coverage.
  • Each article lists its sources at the foot of the page, with links.
  • If we could not confirm a fact from a source, we left it out.
  • The steps for dosing, lows, ketones and sick days contain no jokes and no game. The game appears beside them, never inside them.

What this site is not

This is a video game's website, not medical advice. It is not a health service, a clinic or a charity. The articles explain the general advice; they cannot know your body, your insulin or your history. Follow your own diabetes care team, and ask them before you change anything.

The game's blood sugar, insulin and carb numbers are simplified and tuned for play. Never use them to decide a real dose.

We are not affiliated with, funded by or endorsed by any organization we cite or list. The patient stories are told by the game's characters, who are fictional.
